Bake, Toast and Roast = 烤 (Kao) in Chinese

Chinese has only one word for bake, toast and roast = 烤 (Kao) in Mandarin. What is the difference?

Notice that toast ≠ 土司
Toast (NOUN) = any bread that was put near a fire to make it crisp and brown
